INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/61979 As tourism is a volatile industry that is quickly influenced by issues such as violence, health concerns, and natural disasters. The tourism sector in Hargobinangun village is now suffered from the increased activity of the Merapi and the COVID-19 pandemic and has to adjust to government regulations that affect the decreasing number of tourists. Thus, the tourism industry in this area must adapt to the changes to cope with extreme events. This study aims to examine the factors that influence the tourism industry's adaptive capacity and the strategies used to deal with the eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic. A quantitative analysis of binary logistic regression was used to acquire the determinants of adaptive capacity, and semi-qualitative analysis was executed to identify the coping strategies adopted by the tourism industry. The questionnaires were distributed to the 117-tourism industry-related and semi-structured interviews were conducted with regional government institutions. This study shows that the determinants of adaptive capacity to the eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic are different, and some strategies are effective to enhance capacity and resilience. In the end, this study concluded that to address current challenges, multi-hazards risks assessment should be done by considering the determinants of adaptive capacity sensitive to the type of hazard to minimize the potential risks of disaster in the future and to enhance tourism industry resiliency. text
