The use of gear with the right chemical composition and mechanical properties as well as long service life are required to suit the needs of Indonesia’s industry. Carburizing produces a hard and wear resistant case while maintaining the toughness of the core. The service life of the gear in order of the fastest to fail is from India, Korea, and Japan. Comparative studies were conducted to analyze the reliability of the imported gear through chemical composition testing, microstructure observations, and hardness profiles. The research was conducted on samples around the carburization area on the gear tooth. Chemical composition testing was carried out using Optical Emission Spectroscopy which then will be observed the effect of elements that increase hardenability. Hardness and microstructure testing were carried out on the same path at certain intervals to obtain the relationship between microstructure and hardness. All three samples then compared to analyze the difference in their service life. Combination of alloys increases the hardenability as in the India’s sample with a carburizing layer thickness of 3.6 mm. Tempered martensite structure was found in all parts of the sample with lath martensite in the core and plate martensite in the case. Japan’s sample have the longest service life presumably due to uniform interface hardness. text
