Summary: | Several developments of small aircraft have been carried out by teams that mostly consisted of teaching staff and student from the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ITB, with varying complexity. Understanding and mastery of systems engineering will be very important in the development of small flying vehicles.
This thesis aim is to evaluate the extent to which the systems engineering approach can be applied to the development of small aircraft. Several systems engineering framework references has been studied, so that the important characteristics can be obtained and a general systems engineering framework can be formulated. The implementation of the GL-1 development case study is carried out by mapping the past GL-1 activities and documents on the systems engineering framework.
This research proposes systems engineering framework which includes: technical processes, technical-management processes, V-diagrams, life cycles, and documents. The framework also shows how each characteristics is relate to each other. The development of GL-1 can be mapped and fits within the systems engineering framework that has been created, although there are still many processes that have not been fulfilled. A strategy for implementing the SE framework for GL-1 has also been proposed in this thesis. A strong development roadmap can provide solutions for research schemes that cannot cover the entire development process. Documents, document standards, and databases, as well as student regeneration is solutions to improve product development carried out by universities.
