Summary: | Eyes infection can be caused by many types of microorganism such as bacteria, fungi, virus or
protozoa. Those microorganisms infect eye that may cause some kind of disease such as conjunctivitis,
keratitis, corneal ulcus, blefaritis and other diseases which can lead to blindness to human. Selecting of
drug choice should be determined based on the infecting microorganism. This research was conducted
to evaluate of drugs use in patients with eyes infection in eyes hospital in Bandung. This research was
done retrospectively by collecting data from medical record during October-December 2012. The
results showed that number of eye infection in male (67.58%) was more than female (32.42%). In
addition, the diseases were occurred mostly for people under 21 years old until 60 years old (56.55%).
Gender is not a risk factor that can caused eyes infection. Men have suffered eyes infection more than
women because men tend to have more activities than women so they are more susceptible in eyes
trauma. Percentages of microorganism that infected the eye were consists of Gram positive bacteria
(44.14%), Gram negative bacteria (13.10%), both of bacterias (26.90%), mixed infection of Gram
positive bacteria and fungi (8.96%), mixed of both of bacterias and fungi (1.38%), mixed of Gram
positive bacteria and acanthamoeba (3.44%), mixed of both of bacterias and acanthamoeba (1.38%)
and mixed of Gram positive bacteria, fungi and acanthamoeba (0.7%). Eyes infection that occured in
eye surface was 91.02%, and in inner of the eyes was 8.98%. Mostly, patient with eyes infection got
drugs combination theraphy. Theraphy for eyes infection are main theraphy and supporting theraphy.
The main theraphy is antiinfection drug that was given based on the infectious microorganism, and the
supporting theraphy is artificial tears, mydriatic-sycloplegic, analgesic and corticosteroid. Artificial
tears is an eye drop and it is use to replace tears as eyes lubricant. Mydriatic-sycloplegic is used to
make the pupil wider and paralyze the eyes muscles. Analgesic is used to treat pain and corticosteroid
is used to treat inflammation in patients’s eyes. Antiinfection drug mostly used was antibacterial
because majority eye infection be caused by bacteria. Treatment of eye infection mostly did by topical
administration (eye drop). From this study it could be concluded that the treatment of eye infections in
the hospital was appropriate with the guideline treatment of eye infections. Pattern of the treatment
given were mostly using the antibacterial drug and artificial tears. The accuracy of drug indications in
this study was 88.96%. Inaccuracy of drug selection were observed from drug prescription of
antifungal medications from patients with negative diagnose.
