Dried medicinal herb requires self preparation in serving, which is suspected to affect different lead and cadmium impurities content in it. This research was conducted to know the most frequently used and how people prepare the dried medicinal herb, and to analyze the levels of lead and cadmium impurities in the sample. The impurities levels are analyzed to know the influence of different way of preparations on the levels of lead and cadmium in the sample, as well as to determine whether the levels are still within their safety limit. The sample selection and preparations were determined based on the result of survey by systematic interview, while determination of lead and cadmium impurities were conducted by atomic absorption spectrometry method. The selected sample to be analyzed was Guazuma ulmifolia (jati belanda) leaf, with varieties of preparation process included different rinsing process and different sample boiling container. Results of lead and cadmium levels in unwashed sample and boiled in Pyrex was 3.539 ± 0.243 and 0.015 ± 0.005 ppm, those in washed sample and boiled in Pyrex was 4.725 ± 0.167 and 0.031 ± 0.008 ppm, those in unwashed sample and boiled in pottery was 1.272 ± 0.288 and 0.019 ± 0.005 ppm, and those in washed sample and boiled in pottery was 1.095 ± 0.360 and 0.026 ± 0.001 ppm. Different sample preparation gave significant differences to the lead levels, except between those of unwashed sample and boiled in pottery and those of washed sample and boiled in pottery. However, different sample preparation did not give sigificant differences on the lead levels. The average levels of lead and cadmium measured were still within the safe limit, except for the washed sample and boiled in Pyrex. text |
