An investigation of gynoecial development in Sesbania grandiflora (Linn).Poir was carried out to understand its structure during development until pollination and pollen tube growth. The developmental morphology was observed from preanthesis to anthesis. For anatomical observations, various stages of development of the gynoecium were fixed in glutaraldehyde 2.5% (in phosphat buffer pH 6-7), dehydrated in an alcohol series, and then infiltrated and embedded in a resin mixture. Serial sections of the material 3-5 pm in thickness were made and stained with Hemalum Mayer's. To detect lipids, cuticle, insoluble polysaccharides and proteins on the stigma , pollen viability and pollen tube growth, histochemical methods were used. The ovarium has two distinct zones : the proximal part is solid and the remaining portion hollow with ovules at its ventral side. The ovule is campylotropous, bitegmic, and crassinucellate. The monosporous embryo sac is of the Polygonum type. The stylar cavity is formed at the beginning of the observation. Its further development involves cell disintegration at the distal part of the style. The stigma consists of a papillate epidermis with a thin cuticle, cells with large vacuoles, and cells with conspicous nuclei and dense cytoplasm. The stigmatic exudate is present four days before anthesis and contains lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Self-pollination, occurs one day before anthesis. Pollen which adhere to the stigma produce pollen tubes which penetrate the stigmatic tissue, grow along the epidermis of the stylar cavity and reach the ovule. Fertilization occurs four days after pollination and all ovules in.the ovarium were reached by pollen tubes six days after pollination. Hand pollination was more succesful than natural pollination.</p> text
