Description
Summary:The world is facing the problem of climate change caused by global warming. The construction of power plants that is not followed by the selection of low-carbon fuel types and the use of efficient and environmentally friendly technology will have an impact and exacerbate the problem of global warming. One of the environmentally friendly electricity generators is photovoltaic. However, photovoltaic system is intermittent so that if it is operated outside the utility grid, energy storage devices are needed. The most widely used energy storage device is the battery. A relatively inexpensive battery is a lead-acid battery, but its life cycle is relatively short. In addition, there are long-lived energy storage devices such as supercapacitors, but supercapacitors have low energy storage capacities. To reduce the impact of fluctuating photovoltaic power generation and take advantage of battery and supercapacitor, this study designs an off-grid PV system with a hybrid energy storage system in remote areas in Indonesia, which are batteries and supercapacitors. To see the performance of the system, modelling is carried out on MATLAB and Simulink. Afterwards, predictions of battery life time using the rain flow counting algorithm and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) calculations are also carried. The results showed that the addition of supercapacitor in energy storage system could stabilize the voltage and current in the battery and extend battery life time. In addition, the LCOE of system with supercapacitor is lower than in systems without supercapacitors.
