Description
Summary:The textile and apparel industry has various production units that utilise dyes in their production processes. Along with the current industrial sector, the potential for producing dye waste also increases. One of the carcinogenic dyes that are soluble in water but non- biodegradable is methyl orange. Adsorption methods are often chosen to treat methyl orange waste in waters, alternative adsorbents are also widely used such as the use of natural polymers. Pectin is one of the natural polymers which has capability as an adsorbent for methyl orange. In this study, pectin was isolated from peel of kepok banana (Musa acuminata balbisiana Colla) using reflux method with pH = 2, reaction temperature ± 80 °C for 37,5 minutes. The literature review regarding modification of pectin will be carried out to study appropriate type of modification in increasing performance of pectin in adsorption of methyl orange. Yield of pectin produced in this study was 2,4%. The proposed modification of this research is to change carboxylate function of pectin into a quaternary amine functional group. Esterification and nucleophilicity are the methods proposed in this study. As for the results of literature review, isotherm model for methyl orange adsorption is Langmuir model, and the reaction rate is pseudo-second-order.
