Summary:Coal-fired steam power plant is a mean to meet almost half of Indonesia's electricity needs. Coal is an energy source that is not environmentally friendly and non-renewable. Cofiring of coal with biomass waste in steam power plants is an alternative to reduce the use of coal as well as an option for transitioning the use of non-renewable energy sources to renewable energy sources. During co-firing, coal is stored together with biomass in the coal yard, so the capacity of the coal yard needs to be considered. This study estimates the coal yard capacity of coalfired power plants spread across Indonesia as well as the co-firing ratio that is possible to be applied with respect to coal yard capacity of 14 days of operation. Co-firing is carried out using palm oil empty fruit bunch, rice husks, and bark biomass. This study also determines the areas with the highest biomass demand. Of the 58 coal yards, there are 13 coal yards having 14 days or less capacity, 14 coal yards having 15-21 days, 19 coal yards having more than 21 days, and 12 coal yards having the capacity unknown. Most of the coal yards that can apply co-firing are located on the island of Sumatra, and the area with the highest demand for biomass is the province of Central Java. The results of the coal yard capacity and the co-firing ratio calculation have been mapped using Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
