Description
Summary:Aluminum composites are the answer for applications in automotive and aviation components that require lightweight properties as a substitute for steel. Al-SiC is an example of commercially available aluminum composite and commonly used in automotive and aviation applications. On the other hand, eggshell waste can be used as filler in aluminum composites. In this study, the stir casting method was used to make aluminum composites. The composition of aluminum composites was varied with 2 wt% eggshell (Al-CT), 2wt% silicon carbide (Al-SiC), and hybrid composites with 1wt% eggshell and 1wt% silicon carbide powder (Al-Hybrid), respectively. Each of the three composition was added with 1wt% magnesium powder as a wetting agent to increase the wettability of the matrix with the particle. The sample were tested for mechanical properties using the tensile test and hard test methods. Porosity was calculated using the rule of mixture formula, and the density of the specimen was measured using the Archimedes method. The tensile strength value of the Al-Hybrid specimen has the highest value when compared to the Al-CT specimen and the Al-SiC specimen, but lower than the specimen without the addition of particles (Al-Mg). The porosity data showed that the Al-Hybrid specimen had the highest porosity value, followed by the Al-SiC, Al-CT and Al-Mg specimens, respectively. Meanwhile, hypothesis approach using the ANOVA method showed that the average hardness value between specimens did not show a significant difference.
