Description
Summary:ABSTRACT Soap is a mixture of sodium salts from various natural fatty acids that are used as body cleansing agents. There are several types of solid soap on the market which are grouped based on their appearance, namely opaque soap, translucent soap, and transparent soap. Factors that can affect the soap transparency level is the amount of ethanol, sugar or polyhydroxy alcohol, and glycerin in the soap. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum amount of ethanol, sorbitol, and glycerin to produce transparent solid soap and to meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) No. 06-3532-1994. The production of transparent solid soap begins with determining the oil to be used in the soap making, namely virgin coconut oil which will be made into three formulas with a percentage of ethanol:sorbitol:glycerin of 17.5 : 17.5 : 7.5 for formula I, 5 : 32.5 : 5 for formula II, and 2.5 : 12.5 : 27.5 for formula III. Formula I solid soap is the soap with the best transparency. All transparent solid soap formulas meet the SNI for soap foam stability test. This study concluded that the higher the amount of ethanol and sorbitol used, the transparent solid soap produced would have better transparency.
