Description
Summary:Hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases suffered by community. Many Indonesian people use medicinal plants as adjuvants or substitutes for standard drugs in hypertension therapy. This is due to several factors such as lower prices, more bioavailability and fewer side effects. However, until now there has not been many complete information circulating in the community about plants that can be used as antihypertensive and their effects or interactions when used with standard antihypertensive drugs. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of gathering information about medicinal plants that have the potential to lower blood pressure and recommending plants that can be used as adjuvant therapy in hypertension. This research was conducted by searching the literature through two search engines, namely PubMed and Google Scholar. The literature was sorted based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria defined and analyzed further. From the literature review, it was found that twelve plants can reduce pressure with various mechanism of actions. Five plants including Apium graveolens L., Morinda citrifolia L., Ocimum basilicum L., Moringa oleífera and Punica granatum L. have been clinically tested so they can be recommended for use as adjuvant therapy in hypertension.
