ARTICULATING SOCIOSPATIAL ASSEMBLAGE: DESIGNING ART AND CULTURAL SPACES IN JELEKONG VILLAGE, BANDUNG REGENCY THROUGH A CONCEPTION OF ACTOR-NETWORK

Kampung Jelekong is an art and culture village in Baleendah Subdistrict of Bandung Regency which is well known for its activities of making puppet crafts and paintings. Apart from the existence of artists and their activities of making artworks, the association of Jelekong Village is also shaped by the presence of various sociotechnical actors and the translation of actions among them. This translation of actions, however, in reality often encounters many obstacles, and thus brings instability to the association network of Jelekong Village. The obstacles in the translation of actions mainly occur due to the undistributed competence of an actor to other actors and the unavailability of a capable articulator in mediating many different actions performed by actors. Therefore, this research and design project aimed at designing art and cultural spaces as a sociotechnical medium which are able to navigate the translation of actions. The art and cultural spaces are supposed to increase stability of the existing association network, strengthen the locality of relations within the association, and initiate several new sociotechnical relations in Jelekong Village. This qualitative research and design process was conducted by using the perspective of ANT (Actor-Network Theory). ANT especially helped provide a description of the existing association network and carry out an analysis of the obstacles in the translation of actions involving various types of actors. On the basis of the contextual analysis, three-plus-one types of art-and-cultural-space design interventions were proposed, and they included (1) the revitalization of puppet crafting and performing art center, (2) the design of painting art center, (3) the reconstruction of gallery-houses, and (4) the integration between these two art centers and a number of gallery-houses through some neighborhood streets. Finally, the art and cultural spaces in Jelekong Village were designed by a concept of “Balaisung, Articulating Sociospatial Assemblage”. This design concept ensures that the art and cultural spaces are simply performative, proliferative, representative, and interconnected.
