One of the keys to excellence in LNG Operation is maintaining the integrity of the static equipment. From the compiled data of static equipment, the steam trap has the highest failure rate compared to other equipment such as pressure vessels, piping lines, and tanks. A steam trap is an automatic regulated valve that allows steam condensate and other non-condensable gases to pass without releasing any live steam. Steam trap avoids steam condensate to be flown with the steam to prevent erosion on the equipment. It is one of the critical equipment in a steam system. Having a 42.7% steam trap failure rate, PT Badak NGL experiences 32,004 tons of steam loss per year. The purpose of this study is to explore further the potential problem related to steam trap, not only from the integrity and operational but also from a maintenance aspect. Subsequently, a comprehensive discussion is performed to decide the most effective strategy to overcome the issues, especially to maintain the integrity of the steam trap to support excellent steam operation. Situational analysis based on the Kepner-Tregoe framework is utilized to assess the problem. Continued by performing problem analysis and potential problem analysis. The decision analysis is also performed using the combination of SMART, Value Focused Thinking, and AHP methods. Three major issues of the suspected root causes were revealed from the analysis. They are the long repair lead time, long inspection interval, and improper steam trap sizing. Then, the decision-making analysis was performed with the context of the decision on the strategy for achieving excellent steam trap repair activity, including overcoming the faulty steam trap sizing and decision on the strategy for achieving excellent steam trap inspection activity. Alternatives are generated for each decision context. There are two proposed strategies based on the analysis: optimizing the current repair strategy by improving the inventory and communication system and performing steam trap inspection with shorter time-based intervals. text |
