Summary: | Presently, Indonesia is experiencing the surge of the elderly population as an effect of bonus
demography that prompts the urgency to strengthen city infrastructure to accommodate this
particular age group. This project is titled Pademangan Barat Intergenerational Centre, which aims to
accommodate the activity of the locals by focusing on intergenerational interaction as an effort to
build an age-friendly city. This project mainly consists of two facilities: social day care for the elderly
and a community center. Social day care for the elderly provides a variety of programs for elderly
residing in a residential area, and especially suitable for the non-institutionalized elderly. As for the
community center, it functions as a stimulus for intergenerational interaction. The plot of land has
an area of 10.000 m2, and it is located in Pademangan Barat, North Jakarta City, as one of the wards
in Jakarta with the densest elderly population.
The design issue is derived from various apects that affect the elderly’s quality of life, which
consists of a design that encourages a healthy lifestyle, skill development, and social support. The
space configurations of the facilities are made to prioritize the elderly’s comfort by defining the
space zoning with four stages of private-public spectrum and setting these spaces compatible. Aside
from it, space configuration and building expression are also made to create a homey ambiance so
that the user can stay inside the facility for an extended period of time, namely by attracting visitors
with an active frontage and utilizing various voids to create an enclosed outdoor space and also to
blur the boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces to cater the users who are more
comfortable interacting in outdoor spaces.
This project consists of three building masses connected by a bridge, with the largest mass being
three stories high with building materials dominated by warm colors to create a home-like
atmosphere. For the building structures, conventional beam-columns and wide span structures such
as waffle slabs and vierendeel are utilized to minimize visual obstructions. |
