The generation of internal waves in Lombok strait is closely related to the interaction between barotropic current with the sill which is located between Nusa Penida Island and Lombok Island in that vertical component of current velocity agitates isotherm from itÂ’s equilibrium leading to oscillatory mode in tidal frequencies.
Internal waves are generated in each side of the sill, and they eventually propagate away from the sill. The steeper southern side of the sill causes higher simulated amplitude of internal waves compared to that in the northern part of the sill. Though they oscillate with tidal frequencies, their wave lengths are drastically shorter than those of tides. Strong semidiurnal signal found in the deeper part of the strait as well as strong diurnal signal detected in the upper part of the strait are obvious indication that the energy of internal waves in continuously stratified fluid propagates both horizontally and vertically. Compared to the observation made by Arief (1992), simulation results qualitatively show a good agreement.
text |
