EXPLORATION OF CATALYSTS FOR POLYGLYCEROL SYNTHESIS

Biodiesel is a renewable energy source that has lately seen a rise in output. By acquiring 10-20% of the entire output volume, high biodiesel production increases the amount of glycerol produced as a by-product (Fahrizal, 2014). The price of glycerol can be reduced if more glycerol is produced. T...

The price of glycerol can be reduced if more glycerol is produced. To keep glycerol's price stable, it must be converted into high-value derivative products. As a result, research into the synthesis of glycerol derivative chemicals such polyglycerol is required. Polyglycerol is a molecule made up of one or more glycerols that has gone through an oligomerization stage. Polyglycerol can be utilized as is or processed into additional derivative molecules that can be used to replace fossil fuel derivatives. In this work, catalysts were investigated in order to create polyglycerol from glycerol at lower temperatures than previously used, as well as polyglycerol with low glycerol monomers such as diglycerol, triglycerol, and tetraglycerol. KOH, K2CO3+ZnO, and CaO+ZnO are the catalysts that will be evaluated. High- Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with a Shodex SH1011 column at a column temperature of 50oC will be used to evaluate reaction samples. text
