Description
Summary:Diesel motor is one of internal combustion engine that has been widely used, especially for the land transportation. The performance of the diesel motor can be indicated by the value of the performance parameter. One of the method that can improve the performance of a diesel motor is turbocharger application. Indonesia is a country that has many highland areas. There are residential and other sectors such as plantations, mining, and forests which mostly found in highland areas. The altitude of a place is one of the factor that affecting the ambient air condition. In this project, simulation is done by using diesel engine model with two types of air intake systems, naturally aspirated and turbocharged. Simulations are carried out by varying the pressure and temperature of the ambient air of Jakarta with the air pressure of 1.014 bar and the temperature of 35.6°C, then Padang Panjang with the pressure of 0.921 bar and the temperature of 15.0°C. The value of volumetric efficiency, brake power, brake torque, and thermal efficiency for diesel engine in Jakarta ambient air for both air intake systems are higher compared to Padang Panjang ambient air with Jakarta ambient air and turbocharged engine being the highest for all parameters. There is a differences due to the effect of ambient air condition in the maximum volumetric efficiency by 6.0% for naturally aspirated engine and 2.8% for turbocharged engine. The difference in thermal efficiency is 0.29% for naturally aspirated engine and 0.11% for turbocharged engine. Maximum brake power and maximum brake torque are decreasing in Padang Panjang compared to Jakarta naturally aspirated engines by 7.77% and 7.70% and for turbocharged engines by 3.77% and 1.78%, respectively.
