Description
Summary:Abstract:

Mahkota dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl.) has been used traditionally in Indonesia for treatment of arthritis diseases and proven possess analgesic, antiinflamation, and antigout effects. The aim of this research is to observe antiarthritis effect of ethanol extract of Phaleria macrocarpa fruits on serum interleukin-1(beta) level in collagen induced arthritic rats. Female Wistar rats were induced with collagen II and then given extract of Phaleria macrocarpa once a daily for 12 days. Antiarthritic effect was observed by measuring swelling, redness index, and interleukin-1(beta) level in rat serum. The level of serum interleukin-1(beta) in control group was increased equal to 258 pg/ml on 30 days after induction. Administrations of ethanol extract of Phaleria macrocarpa at doses of 15; 22,5 and 30 mg/kg bw showed the decrease of interleukin-1(beta) level respecsively 114,75; 111 ; and 180,5 pg/ml, and significantly different compared to control group (p<0,05). Thus, it can be concluded that one of mechanism of antiarthritic effect of the ethanol extract of Phaleria macrocarpa is due to suppression interleukin-1(beta)production.
