STUDI INTERAKSI DAN KAJIAN LITERATUR ANTIDIABETIK BIGUANIDA DAN SULFONILUREA DENGAN HERBAL

Many herbal medicines are recommended for the treatment of diabetes and people think that herbal products are safe because they are natural. Some patients prefer to use conventional drugs with herbs simultaneously, even though the use of drugs and herbs simultaneously can cause interactions, namely increasing or decreasing the pharmacological effect of one component (decreasing or increasing the effectiveness of the drug) so that can cause side effects. Metformin in combination with herbs may enhance the therapeutic effect. Sulfonylureas group has a high possibility of adverse drug interactions in patients using a combination of sulfonylureas with herbs. This study reviewed 52 journals where 21 journals discussed the interaction of metformin with herbs and 31 journals discussed the interaction of sulfonylureas with herbs. Based on the results of the study, 31 journals of herbal-drug interactions resulted in negative impacts, 20 drug-herbs interactions resulted in positive impacts and 2 journal no interaction. The existence of drug-herb interactions resulting from co-administration of herbs with conventional drugs can cause very serious clinical consequences. Therefore, patients are encouraged to consult a doctor or pharmacist if they want to use a combination of herbal medicines, especially in the treatment of diabetes so that if an interaction occurs due to the combination of the two drugs, it can be identified.
