The CARE Model is a coaching framework that focuses on optimizing brain function. The initial stage of the CARE Coaching Model is a goal-setting discussion that aims to construct and set an individual’s desired goal. This discussion will induce a mental time process as individuals envision their desired future, thus motivating them to take action to attain their objective. Previous research has proven that higher left than right frontal activity indicates approach motivation and higher right than left frontal activity indicates avoidance motivation. This study aims to determine the effect of goal-setting discussion on individuals’ brain activity and motivation levels at delta (2-4 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), and beta (15-29 Hz) with electroencephalogram (EEG). This research was based on Vanaya Indonesia’s research data. Brain activity from six males was measured during a 3-minute open-eyed resting condition and a 5- to 10-minute goal-setting discussion. The artifact-free data sets were analyzed with the quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) method to obtain brain topography data. Frontal asymmetry calculations were also carried out to see the impact of coaching on individuals’ motivational direction. Results showed that goal-setting discussion induced significant changes in all regions. The most prominent increases are observed on the right temporal of all waves indicating episodic memory and episodic foresight processes on the hippocampus, as well as on the bilateral frontal delta indicating increased ‘wanting’ motivation process. Furthermore, frontal asymmetry calculation reveals increased left than right frontal activity on delta and beta waves indicating approach motivation, while higher right frontal alpha was detected on alpha waves indicating an inhibitory timing process. From these results, it can be concluded that goal-setting discussion induces ‘wanting’ and approach motivation. text
