Description
Summary:Plants were used as medicine by people all over the world. A plant from the genus Lagerstroemia is one of the medicinal plants. Lagerstroemia speciosa, Lagerstroemia indica, Lagerstroemia floribunda, Lagerstroemia loudonii, and Lagerstroemia macrocarpa are members of this genus. Corosolic acid, an L. speciosa isolate, is widely used as an anti-diabetic treatment. Based on their chemical content and pharmacological activity, the other four plant species can also be developed into drugs, so it is necessary to study the chemical content and pharmacological activity of these plant species. Review articles regarding these species are compiled systematically with the inclusion criterias of article are published in the last 20 years maximum, international journals with quartiles Q1-Q4, there must be at least 1 article in the form of an international journal published in the last two years and has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). The exclusion criteria is journal in other language beside English. The traditional uses of these five were ranged from increasing urine output, relieving pain relief, reducing fever to helping control blood sugar levels. Various chemical constituents were found in the five species which are triterpenoid compounds, ellagic acid, coumarins, lignans, neolignans, phenolic glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds (polyphenols), alkaloids, phytosterols, polysaccharides, fatty acids, and lipids. The chemical substance that was isolated and gave antidiabetic activity, was corosolic acid (triterpenoid compound). Because the majority of corosolic acid was extracted from Lagerstroemia speciosa, it is the species with the most extensive use among other species. Further research on more in-depth investigations of pharmacological activity on other species from the genus Lagerstroemia is needed in the future so that they can be used as candidates for medicinal plants to be turned into traditional medicines.
