The uncertainty in capacity and load is the factor that needs to be considered in evaluating the properness of a structure. It becomes the basics in developing a structure reliability concept. Cracks due to fatigue in the joint of jacket offshore platform are classified into two steps. They are the crack initiation and the crack propagation. According to several researches, the crack initiation has occurred since the joint manufacture phase. Therefore, the crack phase that dominates the joint during the structure service life is the crack propagation. It becomes the basics in using the fracture mechanics method to determine fatigue reliability index and remaining life joint.
The fatigue reliability index of the case study joint is determined based on fracture mechanics approach by using some assumptions of crack data. The index is presented in the reliability index curve. There is a correlation between ages and reliability index. The older the ages of the structure, the lesser the reliability index value becomes.
Remaining life can be determined by applying the targeted reliability index to the joint reliability index. The greatest the value of crack initiation, the lesser the remaining life joint. Remaining life provides the information about how long a joint could support the structure, although the joint has undergone the crack initiation. Besides that, remaining life may also provide the information about the time interval that determines a time to do the next inspection. In other words, the next inspection would be carried out when the joint reliability index achieves the limit of targeted reliability index. This is the basics of Reliability Based Inspection.
