A common practice throughout the world is by utilizing natural features such as mountains, cliffs, and rivers as boundaries that separate two areas, as it poses an excellent natural barrier that divides the two areas. However, in the modern era a method of accurately defining boundaries is necessary, as to prevent conflict between areas on each side of the boundary. The Indonesian government has passed a bill that elaborates on the definition of regional boundaries, in order to support the function of local and regional governmental units in carrying out their duties. The ever-changing nature pose as a challenge to the geodesy and geomatics engineering scope of engineering, as it is essential in deciding which method of boundary definition is the most applicable in any given circumstance. This research compares two methods of defining water boundaries between two areas, namely the equidistant and the Thalweg method. The equidistant method is the method of choice, as mentioned on the Decree of the Home Secretary of the Republic of Indonesia no. 141/2017 in defining boundaries of two areas that are located on a river. While the Thalweg method, is an alternative to the former. The equidistant method, divides the river based on its width into two equal parts, while the Thalweg constructs the boundary from a line that is formed by joining multiple sample points of the deepest depth figure. This research will compare and analyse both methods in defining water boundaries to find out to what extent the results will vary, and how it will effect overall accuracy of the boundary itself. The region of interest of this research is the Musi River in South Sumatera, Indonesia. It is hoped that the proceedings from this research can further assist entities of regional government in Indonesia on determining which method is more applicable to various cases of boundary definition. text
