Description
Summary:This study aims to investigate “stress memory” phenomenon on acoustic emission of uniaxial compressive test on concrete specimens. The phenomenon indicates that any materials or rocks could store stress history that previously had been applied. The effect of retention time between the stress previously applied and UCS test, and water content on the occurrence of the stress memory are also evaluated. The occurrence of the stress memory is indicated by the so-called Kaiser Effect of acoustic emission (AE) on a concrete specimen that previously was given a pre-stress. As a result of 20 concrete specimens tested, stress memory was best obtained on the specimens which were pre-stressed in the range of 30 — 50Yo of the average value of uniaxial compressive strength. The retention time was variously given at | minute, 1 hour and 1 day. There was no significant effect could be detected on the influence of the retention time on the acoustic emission tests of dried specimens, whereas a limit of an hour should be noted for specimens which were previously loaded at saturated condition. On the other hand, the Kaiser Effect of acoustic emission test was apparentiy not influenced by the water content condition on the specimens being tested.
