Description
Summary:Exposure of sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation such as IN A, UV B, and UV C. UV A radiation can cause premature aging of the skin, and UV B can cause erythema. Therefore, formulation of nanoemulsion containing virgin coconut oil as oil phase and phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid as active ingredient for protection against UV B radiation is prepared. Formula of virgin coconut oil nanoemulsion is prepared using combination of Tween 80 and glycerin as emulsifier. Optimization of formula was including oil concentration, emulsifier concentration and active ingredient concentration. Evaluations of nanoemulsion included ogranoleptic, pH, and viscosity evaluations, physical stability test using centrifugation and freeze-thaw testing method, and sun protection factor determination in an in vitro test using instrument Q-Sun Xenon Test Chamber, and in vivo test in rabbit. The optimum formula contains 4% of phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid can be prepared using 4% of virgin coconut oil, 15% of Tween 80, and 10% of glycerin. Clear nanoemulsion were produced with 169,5 rim of globule size. Nanoemulsion has pH of 6,7; density 1,0829 g/mL; and viscosity 9,1051 cps. There was no phase separation occured after 5 hours of centrifugation test. Freeze thaw test result showed an increase in globule size in every cycle but no phase separation. In-vitro test with xenon lamp irradiation produced fabric color fading after 8 hours for nanoemulsion, 10 hours for cream comparator, and 18 hours for lotion on the market which SPF is 24 respectively. Result for sun protection factor determination in in vitro test, this nanoemulsion has 10,67 sun protection factor and in in vivo test, this nanoemulsion has 7,67 sun protection factor.
