However, folic acid has a very low stability in the presence of water and other groups of vitamins. Folic acid is also unstable to light exposure, can be easily oxidized, and sensitive to the pH of the medium. The objective of the research is to formulate folic acid into vitamin E based nanoemulsion. Folic acid nanoemulsion was prepared with self-nanoemulsification (SNE) or spontaneous nanoemulsification method, by mixing vitamin E as the oil phase, Tween 20 as the surfactant, and PEG 400 as the cosurfactant. Optimization and construction of pseudo-ternary phase diagram were developed to determine the optimum ratio and incorporation capacity of folic acid. The optimized formula was characterized such as droplet size and the size distribution, entrapment efficiency, pH, morphology, centrifugation test, physical stability test, and the chemical stability of folic acid in nanoemulsion. Physical and chemical stability were evaluated under the storage condition for 14 days and in HCl pH 1,2. Optimized formula was obtained using ratio of vitamin E, Tween 20, and PEG 400 was 1:I 1:1, respectively, with the loading dose of 8 mg in 10 g of oil mixture. The formula contained relatively spherical droplet with the size of 15,10 ± 1,51 nm, polidispersity index of 0,31 + 0,06, and pH 6,24 ± 0,01. The entrapment efficiency of folic acid in the formula was nearly 100%. Folic acid nanoemulsion was relatively stable under the storage condition after kept for 14 days. The formula was stable both physically and chemically in HC1 pH 1,2. The chemical stability of folic acid in nanoemulsion was significantly improved compared to folic acid in solution. This result proved that folic acid encapsulated in nanoemulsion is an appropriate strategy to enhance the stability as well as inhibiting the degradation process of folic acid in liquid dosage form. text
