Summary: | Celery and gotu kola are common used plant which are estimated having growth promotion activity with hair follicle target. The used of those plants in ethanol extract. proms to he irritating at long term application. To improve penetration into hair follicles for enhancing hair growth, those extracts were formulated as O/W nanoemulsion. Effect of celery and gotu kola mixture in O/W nanoemulsion were compared with their single nanoemulsion and single ethanol extract. Nanoemulsion formula consisted of virgin coconut oil, tween 80 and PEG 400 as oil phase, surfactant, and cosurfactant, respectively. The optimization process was conducted to obtain a stable nanoemulsion. Evaluation consisted of the measurement of pH, viscosity, and density. in vivo study was done by measuring the length and weight hairs of male Wistar rats for 21 days. Hair growth measurement was performed on days 7, 14 and 21, while the hair weight measurement. was performed only on day 21. Nanoetnulsions of celery--gotu kola had pH of 6.274:0.14; viscosity of 10 cps and density was 1,04 g/mL. The result of centrifugation and freeze and thaw studies indicated that globules of nanoemulsion increased by the time. The test group given the nanoemulsion of celery-gotu kola showed hair growth enhancement. The values were 9.71%, 13.79%, and 14.30% at day 7, 14, and 21, respectively. While the test group given minoxidil as a positive control showed the highest rate of hair growth, which were 19.51%, 13.31%, and 13.99% at day 7, 14, and 21, respectively. The group given nanoemulsion of celery-gotu kola and minoxidil showed hair growth enhancement higher than their single nanoemulsion and single ethanol extract. Nanoemuisions O/W can improve the penetration to pilosebaceous thus it can act as hair growth promoter. The combination of celery and gotu kola in the form of nanoemulsions has the ability to improve hair growth better than their single nanoemulsion and single ethanol extract.
