Summary: | The rise of house rent, apartment rent, student dormitory, and co-working space are affecting the
perspective of society as options to live. Many who are young adults or young couples see an
apartment as a brief stepping stone before they are able to purchase a house. Others who move
frequently see it as a temporary stop. Young adults were chosen because 47.5% of Indonesia's
population is aged between 20-49 years, the age range with the highest potential as first time
home buyers. This research aims to prove whether renting apartments is considered as a stepping
stone before moving to landed houses. The urbanization causes the increase of population in
urban areas, which increases housing demand. Split-level houses were developed to provide
more space on the limited area, which make up a significant portion of the housing inventory
today. The choice of dwelling is understood as the actual behavior influenced by a person’s
housing preference. This study adopts a qualitative approach by using semi-structured interviews
in order to gather data about the preference of the residents. Resident interviews were analyzed
using thematic analysis to closely examine the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas
and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly. The analysis results shows that apartment
renters are planning forward to move to landed houses in the future. With the results obtained,
this study will be a useful suggestion for further research regarding housing preference.
