The objective of this study was to formulate solution dosage form containing water extract of Allium shoenoprasum L. leaf and evaluating its hair growth-promoting activity and irritation effect. The hair tonic formulation was made using water, ethanol, glycerin, and propyleneglycol in different ratio as a vehicle and 30% of Allium schoenoprasum L extract. These formulations were applied topically on shaved skin of male albino rabbit of New Zealand strain. The length and the amount of the hair growth after using this preparation for several days were measured. Minoxidil (2%) hair tonic was used as a reference. The result showed that the best formulation for promoting hair growth was given by the formulation containing 30% extract, 15% glycerin and 20% ethanol. The hair growth-promoting activity of this formulation was significantly different (p<0,05) compare to another solvent combination and its effect was similar to minoxidil hair tonic. This formulation was barely perceptible on skin and eyes irritation. <br /> text |
