Description
Summary:Background and purpose: Selenium has been recognized as one of the essential nutrients for living organisms but can be toxic at high dosage. Each plants have difference ability to absorb Se from its growth medium. Kangkong (Ipomoea reptans P.) as one of important vegetables that is frequently consumed in Indonesia became the object of research because of the possibility containing Se from nature or contaminated environment. Consumption of Se exceeding the recommended daily intake may increase risk toxicity of Se to human. This research purpose is to determine the ability of Kangkong to accumulate Se from the medium. Method: Se content in Kangkong was quantified by spectophotometry with dithizone as chromogenic agent. Se was measured in aliquot of 10 mL solution containing dithizone (45 union), HC1 (0,4 M), Triton X-100 (0,4% w/v), and kept for 15 minutes. Complex of selenium dithizonate separated by cloud point extraction using Triton X-100 to simplify the technique and measured at 417 and 592 nm. Result: Total of Se (IV) content per gram dry weight sampel of Kangkong at 0 ppm Se added to soil is 58,250 ug, 1 ppm Se added is 461,263 ug, and 2 ppm Se added is 744,673 ug. Conclusion: Se content in Kangkong increased with higher concentration of Se added to soil.
