Stroke therapy hasn't developed well and the effective medicine still not established especially for hemorrhagic stroke. Among Indonesia's natural resources, there are 2 plants i.e.Centella asiatica leaves and Echinacea purpurea flower suspected have potential as an alternative medicine for stroke. The aim of this research is to observe the recovery effect of ethanol extract of Centella asiatica leaves and Echinacea purpurea flower toward rat stroke model. Plant extract was characterized and determined its chemical content by phytochemical screening method. Male Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups which are normal, positive control, DRP and DTP (Centella asiatica low and high doses), DRE and DTE (Echinacea purpurea low and high doses), ASP (Aspirin 45 mg/kg). All rats except normal group were inducted to be rat hemorrhagic stroke model. Behavioral test were observed after post-operative on 1 , 3'1, 7th, 10th, 14th, and 21st day i.e. Forelimb Placing Test (FPT), Forelimb Use Asymmetry Test (FUAT), Comer Turn Test (CTT), and rotarod test to determine antistroke effect of both extracts. After 21 days post-operative, the lesion area in brain was determined by using TTC assay. Data obtained were analysis statistically using t-student test with p<0.1; p<0.05; and p<0.01 to show the significant differences. FPT, FUAT, and rotarod data showed significant recovery start from day 3th but CTT data didn't show the recovery of motoric function after giving both doses of extracts. However, from all data, both extracts have effect of motoric function recovery from lesion on certain day. The result of TTC assay showed that there is no lesion on rat brain on each group except for positive control group. Both extracts have potential as stroke medicine because it can cure the motoric function deficit on stroke rat and there is no lesion to the brain. Centella asiatica extract is more effective than Echinacea purpurea in treating stroke. Low dose of Centella asiatica extract (76 mg/kg) already can recover motor function while for Echinacea purpurea extract, low dose (27 mg/kg) is more effective than the high. text
