Description
Summary:Nowadays, immunostimulant drugs have been well developed, including the natural products. In Papua, sarang semut has been used traditionally as alternative to treat ulcer, tumor and cancer diseases. Because of cancer can also be treated by modulating immune system, so that it was suggestion that sarang semut has a potency to modulate immune system in order to treat cancer. This research was carried out to reveal the potency of sarang semut as immunomodulatory agent. The research was begun with collecting, determining and characterization of the test plant, extracting the active substances in water and ethanol by reflux method, followed by immunomodulatory effect test of those extracts in Swiss Webster mice. Effect on nonspecific immune response was determined by carbon clearance test and organ index, while effect on specific immune response was deten-nined through antibody and IFN-y titers. Effect on nonspecific immune response showed that water extract (100 mg/kg bw) and ethanol extract (200 mg/kg bw) have immunostimulating activity, with fagocytic index > 1. Only ethanol extract shows immunosuppressive effect on organ index .Test against humoral immune response shows that only water extract at two doses stimulated humoral response indicated through primary and secondary antibody titers whichhigher than control. On cellular immunity, those extracts can stimulate IFN-y production however the titers were not significant compare to control. Based on this research, water and ethanol extracts of sarang semut have immunomodulatory activity. Water extract at 100 mg/kg bw and ethanol extract (200 mg/kg bw) have immunostimulating effect.
