Summary: | Leaves of some members of Annonaceae family have been widely used to treat a large number of diseases. Beside that, previous studies have reported the antimicrobial activity of some members of this family. The aim of this research was to test the antifungal activity of some Annonaceae family leaves in ethanol extract on Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Microsporum gypseum. The crude drug was extracted by reflux method using 96% ethanol. The extracts were tested for their antifungal activity using microdilution method to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MIC). Extract with the highest activity against the tested fungi was then compared with reference drug ketoconazole and performed the time-kill curve profile test. The extract was characterized by phytochernical screening, water and ethanol extractable matter, the yield of extraction, density, and chromatogram pattern. The ethanol extract of Annona squamosa leaves contained flavonoid, steroidltriterpenoid, and phenolic groups. The ethanol extract of Cananga odorata leaves contained flavonoid, steroid/triterpenoid, and phenolic groups. The extracts with the highest antifungal activity were ethanol extract of Annona squainosa and Cananga odorata. The MIC of the Annona squaniosa extract (density extract 1.35 g/mL) was 0.5% for Candida albieans and 2% for Aspergillus niger. While, the MIC of the Cananga odorata extract (density extract 1.24 g/mL) was 0.25% for Microsporum gypseum. The equivalency of antifungal activity of Annona squctmosa extract to ketoconazole showed that 1 mg extract had equivalency activity to 2.77 x le mg of ketoconazole for Candida alhicans and 1.12 x I 0 mg of ketoconazole for Aspergillus niger. While, the equivalency of antifungal activity of Cananga odorata extract to ketoconazole showed that 1 mg extract had equivalency activity to 2.71 x 10-' mg of ketoconazole for Microsporum gypseum. The time-kill curve test of Cananga ()donna ethanol extract against Microsporum gypseum growth profile displayed fungistatic activity on 1 MIC and fungicidal activity on 4 MIC. The ethanol extract of Cananga odorata had the highest activity against Microsporum ,foipseum with MIC 0.25%. The equivalency of antifungal activity of Cananga odorata extract to ketokonazol showed that 1 mg extract had equivalency activity to 2,71 x 10' mg of ketokonazol for Microsporum gvpseum. The time-kill curve test of Cananga odorata ethanol extract against Microsporum gypseum growth profile displayed fungistatic activity on 1 MIC and 4 MEG. |
