Description
Summary:Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease that shows imbalance of glucose level in blood as a result from insufficiency of insulin, relative or absolute. Insufficiency of insulin gives effects like hyperglycemia and glycosuria. DM is one of metabolic disorder that can cause systemic problems affecting organs such as retina microvascular injury, damage on nerves, kidneys, and other organs. Prevalence of DM patients in the world has been estimated to be 4.4% in 2030. Total of DM patients has been predicted to increase from 171 million in 2000 become 366 million in 2030. In Indonesia, it has been estimated that it will increase from 8.4 million in 2000 become 21.3 million in 2030. In pharmacy department, treatment using natural sources has become progressive development. For DM disease, there are a lot of natural sources can be used, for example is bamboo shoot from Dend•ocalarnzis aspen. Powdered bamboo shoot was extracted with ethanol 95% soxhlet. The test animal, male Wistar rat, were divided into 5 groups consisting of negative control, positive control, standard (Glybenclamide 0.5 mg/kg bw), the ethanolic extract of bamboo shoot 100 mg/kg bw, and ethanolic extract of bamboo shoot 200 mg/kg bw group. Rat was induced with Streptozotocin 30 mg/kg bw intraperitoneally with the addition of high diet food given during the research to form DM type 2 model. The test substance was given on the 12th day after induction every day for 3 weeks. The glucose test was done the day before induction, after induction, and every week after the induction for 3 weeks. The ethanolic extract of bamboo shoot 100 mg/kg did not show any antihyperglycemia effect. The ethanolic extract of bamboo shoot 200 mg/kg shows significance reduction on blood glucose concentration in 1st and 2nd week after the induction. Reduction percentage for each week is 31.69 % and 23.69%. The use of ethanolic extract of bamboo shoot 200 mg/kg bw in oral form showed antihyperglycemia effect.
