One-third of all the diabetic patients will develop diabetic nephropathy. The objectives of the present study are to identify the characteristics of diabetes mellitus (DM) induced by streptozotocin (STZ) 30 mg/kg body weight and 65 mg/kg body weight in male Wistar rats, and to determine the suitable animal model for diabetic nephropathy. The rats were randomized into six groups. The first group as normal was fed with standard diet and the second group consumed high-diet. The other two groups were treated by one intraperitoneal injection of STZ 30 nig/ kg body weight, each was fed with standard and high-diet. The rest were treated by injection of STZ 65 mg/ kg body weight, each consumed standard and high-diet. Body weight, blood glucose level, sistolic blood pressure, hematocrit value, insulin concentration, serum and urine creatinine concentration and creatinine clearance were measured before injection, and 7th and 30th day after injection. On 7th day after STZ injection, blood glucose level in every diabetic group showed an increase of 8.04%, 4.75%, 69.88%, 147.61%, and 143.00% respectively. On the contrary, the creatinine clearance of each diabetic group demonstrated a decline of 74.00%, 83.95%, 85.71%, 68.97%, and 78.05% respectively. After 30 days, all rats were sacrificed. Kidneys were dissected out and histopathological evaluation was done. The result suggested that STZ 30 mg/kg body weight and high-diet developed DM type 2 while STZ 65 mg/kg body weight developed DM type 1. All diabetic rats developed diabetic nephropathy after one month. text
