This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the characteristics of the coal in those seams with depositional environments and geological complexity. The analytical methods used in this study are the petrographic analysis to determine the maceral composition and vitrinite reflectance, and also proximate analysis to determine the moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon. From the results of petrographic analysis, it is obtained from the maceral composition of each sample representing complex, moderate, and simple geological conditions, showing the same characteristics. Maceral composition is generally dominated by maceral derived from herbaceous plants rather than maceral derived from woody plants. Maceral composition of the coal can be interpreted derived from the bog peat with oligotrophic type in ombrotrophic conditions, sedimented in limnic facies at the swamp lakes on the intramontane basins. Although there are similarities of plant origin, facies and depositional environment, there are a differences in the value of the random reflectance of vitrinite maceral group and the results of the proximate analysis. These differences were caused by the age difference of rock formation and were not caused by the geological complexity. text
