Description
Summary:Societal changes due to technology's advancement affect the delivery of information, becoming interactive and connected. This phenomenon has led to changes in learning patterns and strategies that rely more on online media use. Design education is generally dominated by experiential learning through sense sensitivity, logic, and motor skills training to form critical, appreciative, and creative characters. Guidance and discussion activities build an understanding of tacit knowledge. The research conducted a mixed-method approach to examine this problem, with a case study on the Visual Communication Design (VCD) study program at Telkom University and comparing the VCD study program at the Bandung Institute of Technology. User experience is used to measure student experience in online learning. Case studies are carried out in the theoretical course with a visual-based approach and the practice course with an experiential learning approach at the primary level. The results show that both methods provide a positive user experience in online learning. These results are related to positive perceptions of function and emotions on teaching materials, activities, and online learning environments. Departing from collaborative practice lectures between lecturers and students, observations and interviews of studio lectures using an online collaborative platform were conducted. This study shows deep engagement when interaction and collaboration occur, emphasising oral communication while interacting with visual displays. From the study results of practical lectures and studios, the research formed online learning of the design field collaboration model. Furthermore, the human content and supporting factors studied in theory, practice and studio lectures create a digital interaction model for online learning of the design field. This interaction shows a change in the behaviour of students and lecturers in obtaining knowledge compared to face-to-face lectures. Knowledge from external sources is obtained by exploring information and looking for related patterns to form a new understanding. Through online learning, design knowledge is not only transferable but can be shared and evolved.
