The concept of pavement recycling had been existed since long time ago and it is currently still being used on road pavement construction. Due to the saving consideration on materials and energy, recycling becomes one of interested alternative for road rehabilitation. Recycling involves pavement layer scrapping, grinding, addition of asphalt, and or modifier, and also new aggregate (if necessary).
The process of recycling in this research was started by recycling the reclaimed of asphalt concrete by investigating the characteristics of asphalt and aggregate properties from the extraction results. The addition of asphalt or modifier and new aggregate materials were required in the recycling design mixture. The modifier used in this research was Minarex D.
This thesis describes the result of laboratory investigations on recycling mixture of Asphalt Concrete Binder Course (AC-BC) using Marshall Method. The flexure fatigue test with controlled stress and sinusoidal loading were used to investigate the fatigue performance of that mixture.
Results of Marshall Test show that the values of Marshall properties such as stability, density, MQ, VFB and Flow can fulfill the specification required by the Department of Public Works. However, the VIM value was 2.73percent which cannot meet the specification required by the Department of Public Works. From the Marshall Immersion Test, it was found that the IRS (Index of Retained Strength) value of the recycling mixture was 90.02percent. This value met the specification required by the Department of Public Works.
Based on the fatigue results, the recycling mixtures show a good performance by having the longest fatigue life. The fatigue life for recycling mixtures were 42147 cycles at stress level of 0.26 MPa, 12972 cycles at stress level of 0.51 MPa and 9726 cycles at stress level of 0.77 MPa. |
