Summary: | Turmeric is a plant that is widely used as herbal medicine and as a spice. Turmeric is one source of curcuminoid compounds. Content of curcuminoids from turmeric rhizome extract is influenced by several factors, one of which is the solvent for extraction. Solvent used affects the amount of curcuminoids extracted and how the extract to be dried. The experiments of curcuminoid extraction from turmeric were conducted using four different types of solvents. The solvents that used were 50% ethanol, 70% ethanol, 96% ethanol, and ethyl acetate. Extraction was done using reflux method with the same period of extraction and amount of solvents. The extracted material in the form powder turmeric that had 7.89% moisture content, 7.51% ethanol-soluble extract, 12.25% water-soluble extract, and 6.67% total ash content. Yield results obtained for the extraction with 50% ethanol was 8.70%, 70% ethanol 21.05%, 96% ethanol 29.29%, and ethyl acetate 6.08%. Measurement of curcuminoid levels in extracts were performed using high performance liquid chromatography. Highest levels of curcuminoids present in the ethyl acetate extract at 58.53%. Levels of curcuminoids in ethanol extracts increased with increasing ethanol content in the solvent. Levels of curcuminoids in 50% ethanol, 70% ethanol and 96% ethanol were 4.16%, 29.12%, and 36.51%, respectively. |
