Summary: | Black sea urchin (Diadema setosum Leske) is one of the animals that can be found in various seas in Indonesian archipelago. Sea urchin is known for its high source of protein. Fifty percent of the black sea urchin body mass are shell and the spine. Unfortunately these parts have never been used before and eventually become a waste. As it was studied reported in the previous study, the shell and spine extracts have cytotoxic activities. Therefore, this research is conducted to figure out whether other activity as antibacterial and antioxidant activities—exist. The method is conducted by collection, preparation, and characterization of the raw material, followed extraction by reflux using solvents with increasing polarity, and identification of the extracts was also conducted. The antibacterial and antioxidant activities were tested by bioautoraphy and the scavenging of radical compound 2,2-dipheny1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The bioactive compounds were also analyzed. Diadema setosum spine extract produced transparent zone on the culture of testing bacteria and yellow spot on radical compound (DPPH) that sprayed on thin layer plate. It was conclused that the n-hexane, etil acetate, and ethanol extracts from Diadema setosum spine contained of steroid/trierprnoid and compounds that gave the positive result with citroboric reagent, having antibacterial and antioxidant activity. |
