Description
Summary:Biomass is renewable carbon source and can be converted into solid, liquid, or gaseous fuels through the addition of other chemicals. Products from biomass conversion, can act as substitute for non-renewable fossil fuels. One of the simplest biomass compounds is sucrose. Conversion of sucrose can produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), which can act as building blocks in manufacture of biofuels. Because the importance of 5-HMF’s application, this research was conducted on sucrose conversion reaction to produce 5- HMF with more environmentally friendly concept, which is using ionic liquid media. Ionic liquid is solvent that applies the concept of green chemistry because it can be used repeatedly. Therefore, the aim of this research were to synthesize [DBTIm]Cl, [BMIm]Cl, and [DMIm]Br ionic liquids using the MAOS (Microwave Assisted Organic Chemistry) method. Then the synthesized [BMIm]Cl and [DMIm]Br ionic liquids were applied in sucrose conversion to produce 5-HMF at various temperatures and time. After that, the ionic liquids that had been used in the reaction were recycled. From this research, 1,3- dibutyl-2,4,5-triphenimidazolium chloride ([DBTIm]Cl), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIm]Cl) and 1-decyl- 3-methylimidazolium bromide ([DMIm]Br had been successfully synthesized using the MAOS (Microwave Assisted Organic Chemistry) method, based on the results of the characterization using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), FT-IR (Fourier Transform – Infrared), 1H-NMR (1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) ), and 13C-NMR (13C-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). % yield of [DBTIm]Cl, [BMIm]Cl, and [DMIm]Br ionic liquids were 94.45%; 23.05%; 99.67%, respectively. Then [BMIm]Cl and [DMIm]Br ionic liquids were applied in sucrose conversion, and the products were characterized using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy) and GC-FID (Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector) to determined % yield of 5-HMF. It had been obtained the optimum % yield of 5-HMF with [BMIm]Cl ionic liquid was 66.23% and with [DMIm]Br ionic liquid was 0.39%.
