PREPARATION OF BARIUM ALGINATE HYDROGEL AND ITS APPLICATION AS METHYLENE BLUE ADSORBENT
Methylene blue is a cationic aromatic heterocyclic dye which often used in the textile, wool, and paper industries. Disposal of high concentrations of methylene blue waste into water sources can damage aquatic ecosystems and cause disease in humans. Adsorption is an effective method in removing dye...

Disposal of high concentrations of methylene blue waste into water sources can damage aquatic ecosystems and cause disease in humans. Adsorption is an effective method in removing dye pollutants from waters because it is relatively inexpensive, simple to operate and highly effective. Barium alginate hydrogel is an alginate polymer-based adsorbent which can interact effectively with methylene blue dye. This is due to the presence of hydroxy and carboxyl groups in the polymer chain. In addition, barium alginate hydrogel can store and absorb water in the interstitial spaces between the polymer chains. In this research, barium alginate hydrogel has been prepared and characterized as an adsorbent of methylene blue. The grain diameter of barium alginate hydrogel under various conditions and the pH of the solution was studied. The grain diameter of barium alginate hydrogel become smaller as gelation time increase. The diameter of the barium alginate hydrogel beads swelled when immersed in an alkaline solution, shrinked in an acidic solution, and did not significantly change in aqua dm. The adsorption of methylene blue reached its optimum condition at pH 6 and a 60-minute contact time. The barium alginate hydrogel has a pzc value of 4.8. The adsorption of methylene blue by barium alginate hydrogel were followed the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model and pseudo second order reaction kinetics. text |
