Summary: | Since 2017, the Surabaya City Government has begun to intensify the development of public spaces according to their designation in the legislation and the Surabaya City RDTR. At the same time, the former land of TPA Keputih is being revitalized into a PUPR Park, Harmoni Park, and Creative Public Space. On the other hand, the existence of cemeteries and settlements around the site refers to adverse regional zoning (coastal areas), the dominance of privatization of public space, and changes in land function. According to Focault (1967), death is considered a private or individual thing at this time. As a result, the area around the cemetery is often considered as a dead city. Therefore, the design of this project has a vision for creating a utopia of representations of life and death that strengthens the site's context. Because it is in the context of an issue dominated by the presence of cemeteries, the narrative that wants to convey is death. Many cultures and religions have their own meanings and ideas about death in Indonesia, which are implied in various traditions, ceremonies, monuments, and tombs. Departing from the background, it is transformed into an architectural response to the typology of the museum as a conservation platform that can present death in various meanings. The main design issues chosen were image and identity, circulation and sequence, integration and response to site context, and exhibition technology in accommodating the narration. To answer the four design issues, the basic concept is formulated: the museum as a heterotopia of space and time where both are present simultaneously. This museum facility is also supported by public outdoor space in the form of a memorial garden and a monumental terrace that responds to the surrounding context. |
