The presence of heavy metals in the environment, especially in water, besides being able to pollute the environment can also be harmful to human health. Research has been carried out to study effective methods to reduce the concentration of heavy metals to be discharged into the waters. However, in a long period of time this treatment can damage the environment due to the accumulation of heavy metals which is not proportional to the environmental improvement period. The adsorption method has several advantages such as high effectiveness and efficiency, and relatively have no negative impact. One way to reduce lead(II) levels is by adsorption using cellulose biopolymer. The adsorbent made from cellulose filter paper has advantages of abundant availability, easy preparation, and relatively inexpensive. In this study, cellulose sourced from filter paper was modified with mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) which would attach covalently through esterification reaction. The resulting product was characterized using FTIR. The observations were continued by measuring the decrease in lead(II) concentration over a certain time using the Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy instrument. The lead(II) ion adsorption in this study followed pseudo-order kinetics and follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. MAA modified filter paper has adsorption efficiency of up to 65% at room temperature, at pH 4, optimum time is 120 minutes with adsorbent dose of 1 mg/L and lead(II) ion concentration of 100 ppm. This is much different from filter paper without modification which only has an efficiency of 24% under the same conditions. The increase in lead (II) adsorption by the MAA modified cellulose filter paper adsorbent is due to the addition of a thiol group (-SH) which can interact with metals. From the thermodynamic data obtained, it is found that the value of ?Go is positive which indicates the reaction occurs unspontaneously, ?Ho obtained is negative indicating the reaction is exothermic, ?So obtained is negative which indicates decreased in irregularity. text
