Description
Summary:Walking is the most basic mode of transportation and is done by erveryone at the beginning and end of their trip. In the context of Sustainable Urban Transport, pedestrians are one of the options that can be worked upon and an important component that determines the success of the urban transportation system (Pojani, 2015). In order to create good pedestrian path conditions in urban areas, it is necessary to assess the level of walking comfort which is known as the walkability index. Medan City as one of the big cities in Indonesia has developments that tend to be concentrated in the city center so that it can affect the tran sportation system. As a transportation infrastructure which located in the city center, Medan Station has various problems for pedestrian facilities, even though this station is located in a zone block where it was planned for intermodal development that connect more than one movement network. This study aims to analyze the level of walkability and pedestrian perception in the Medan Station Area. The selected area is a radius of 400 meters from the station. The radius is assumed from the pedestrians willingness to walk to reach the center of activity comfortably. To measure the walkability level, method of walkability index by the Asian Development bank is used, in which this method consists of nine parameters. This study also analyzes the perception of pedestrians around Medan Station. The results of this study showed that the characteristics of pedestrian facilities in the Medan Station area were divided into 3 groups which generally describe the condition of pedestrian facilities as very good, good, and bad. From the assessment of the nine parameters, overall the parameters that have a bad score are supporting facilities (amenities) and disability infrastructure. The majority of pedestrians in Medan Station are women and students that usually use motorbikes as their daily mode of transportation. Based on the walkability level category of the 22 road segments assessed, 2 segments are considered very good for walking (highly walkable), 17 segments are good enough for walking (waiting to walk), and 3 segments a re not good for walking (not walkable). In addition, this study show that pedestrians are still willing to walk at a distance of 1 -2 km with a desired travel time of 5-10 minutes. Walking mode is the mode that gets affected by pollution the most while the main priority that needs to be improved for pedestrian facilities is the ease for disabilities.
