ANALYTICAL STUDY OF WATER WAVES GENERATED BY LANDSLIDES ON A SLOPING BEACH

Tsunami is one of the disasters that often occur in Indonesia which causes a lot of environmental damage, property losses and fatalities. Most tsunamis are caused by tectonic earthquakes. In spite of that, tsunamis can be generated by landslides due to volcanic activity such as volcano eruptions that are caused by mountain material landslides or seabed landslides activity. Unlike tsunamis triggered by tectonic earthquakes, tsunamis generated by landslides are not widely understood. Therefore, studying this topic is very important to do. Here, the process of the formation of water waves generated by landslides on a sloping beach will be studied with mathematical modelling. This study carried out on the equation of water waves on a sloping beach with landslides as an external force, where the analytical solution can be obtained through the application of the Hankel transformation. Furthermore, for certain landslides movements, analytical solutions can be formulated explicitly. Results from this solution can directly describe the development of surface waves generated by landslides on the sloping beach. The simulation shows that larger landslides will induce larger waves. In addition, when the beach slope is steeper, the wave elevation is higher. From that result, we can conclude that water waves generated by landslides on a sloping beach are affected by two parameters, those are the landslide mass and the beach slope.
