Description
Summary:Physical activity is an activity that is beneficial for health and can reduce various diseases if done regularly. However, physical inactivity is the biggest public health problem of the 21st century that triggers premature death and the emergence of noncommunicable diseases. Walking for at least 7.000 steps is one of the physical activities that can increase health, but the average number of steps for Indonesians is less than that number so Indonesia become the laziest foot walker country in the world. If physical inactivity is ignored, it will increase the obesity rate in Indonesia to 40% by 2030. A study showed that the environment plays an important role to increase the frequency and duration of physical activity. Another study also showed that there is a positive correlation between the commercial area and high levels of physical activity in young people. As a famous area for its trading activities, Pasar Baru has the potential to increase physical activity, but still has problems with its facilities. The problem is intervened only as a support of trade and service activities, not yet related to the issue of physical activity and health. The focus of research and regulations related to increasing physical activity is also still rarely done. The objective of this study is to formulate the principle of arranging the pedestrian way that can create an environment that supports physical activity by considering the preferences of visitors and the factors that influence them. The methods used in this research are quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative methods are used to discover the visitors’ characteristics, activity patterns, walking activity, and factors that affect physical activity. The qualitative methods are used to compose the potential and problems of environmental components and formulate the criterion and components of arranging the pedestrian way. The findings of this research indicate three factors that influence physical activity, there are individual, social, and environmental factors. There are also six criteria to structure the principle of arranging the pedestrian way based on the preferences of visitors, there are integration, convenience, security and safety, accessibility, continuity, and scenery of the environment
