Summary:Forests are providers of ecosystem services with the greatest biodiversity in the world. Forests provide extraordinary services for habitat protection, climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon, maintaining soil stabilization, and mitigating natural disasters. Unfortunately, forests in the Southeast Asia region are shrinking faster than any other area in the world, between 1990 and 2020 the Southeast Asian region lost 376,000 km2 of forest area. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on forest ecosystem services as a consideration in the management of forest sustainability. This study aims to develop an index of forest ecosystems in Southeast Asia using the integration of remote sensing data. The methodology used in developing the forest ecosystem services index uses a multidisciplinary approach. Spatial data of vegetation products from the MODIS Terra satellite such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Fraction Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR), Leaf Area Index (LAI), and Gross Primary Product (GPP), carbon stock, precipitation, tree height, soil moisture, and soil water content from satellite imagery were used in this study by utilizing remote sensing technology and geographic information systems. The results of the analysis of the development of the forest ecosystem services index in Southeast Asia are expected to be considered in the management of forest resources, as well as to support the goal of COP26, which is a conference that discusses global attitudes on climate change issues in protecting and restoring ecosystems.
