This is because it is easy to modify with various functional groups. One of modification that can be done is modify it with fatty acids. The aim of this research was to synthesize various fatty acid–modified silicas and characterize them. The fatty acids used in this study were octanoic acid, decanoic acid, lauric acid and myristic acid. Similar model compounds were also synthesized to help confirm the fatty acid modified silica. The synthesis of fatty acid-modified silica was carried out by reacting each of these fatty acids with N1-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine as a silica source with coupling reagents N, N'- dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). In this study, silica-fatty acids have been successfully synthesized as indicated by the FTIR spectral data. The fatty acid-modified silica product has a typical absorption at 840 cm–1 and 1264 cm–1 from the Si–O–Si vibration. Characterization by SEM showed that the fatty acid-modified silica was prismatic with a size of more than 10 ?m. The absorption test was carried out by contacting the silica product with caffeine as the analyte. The results of the absorption test showed that the increase in the length of the fatty acid carbon chain led to an increase in analyte absorption, namely 7.45% for silica-octanoate, 8.83% for silica-laurate, and 10.90% for silica-myristic. Testing as an HPLC column did not provide retention because the size of the fatty acid modified silica being too large. text
